Great Wall Camping

Take your favorite bottle of liquor and together with some good friends go and enjoy one of the best traveling experiences of your life. Camping overnight at the Great Wall, you can look up at a sky full of glittering stars. This nighttime Great Wall makes one feel like being in a cradle, its ancient body kindly embracing us. This place has seen the blood and tears of war, and also a thousand years of solitude. Perhaps like us, you are nothing but an adventurous, youthful vigor. Perhaps like us, you love to gaze at the shooting stars and tell stories till sunrise. In the morning you wake to another beautiful clear day, footprints and the echoes of laughter are the only things left behind.

Camping at the General Xu Great Wall 2 days

Explore and camp at the Great Wall, built by General Xu in the Ming Dynasty as an example of how all the Great Wall around Beijing should be constructed.  This 10-km hike includes fantastic mountain and lake views and a superb sunset over  the mighty Yangbian Great Wall and camping gear delivery 🙂 It’s a quit comfy 2,5  hour hike on the first day so it is perfect if you are up for a stunning yet relax Great Wall camping trip.

General Xu Great Wall camping

General Xu Great Wall camping trip. Yup we hike all the Wall you see in this picture 🙂

For this trip, we depart at 1 pm and  drive about 2 hours northwest to the Hebei province.

A 1 hour hike through the brush and up  a gentle slope brings us to the Great Wall. We take a short break and prepare for a 2-hour gentle uphill hike on top of the Great Wall. There are a few parts where the wall is crumbled, so make sure to wear some sturdy boots.

The first tower we reach on the General Xy Great Wall camping trip

The higher we get the more fantastic views we can see. On the highest point which is about 1000 meters above sea level, we will have amazing views over mountains, lakes, and miles and miles of the Great Wall.

From the start of the hike it takes us about 3 hours walk to reach our camping spot, a nice flat field right next to the Great Wall. If you still have energy you can continue hiking for a bit till the next view point where you can see the Border Defense Great Wall curling over the mountain ridges. Or… you can relax with a beer and watch the sun set while a home cooked buffet is delivered right to you tent.

Sunset at the General Xu Great Wall camping trip

The early morning sun will shine right into your tent and the smell of coffee will lure you out and our farmhouse friends will deliver our breakfast. We will pack our gear and start hiking trough the hills and fields of Hebei  for a good hour till we reach a double walled ming village. Our driver will pick us up here and bring us back to Beijing. We will be back at our Lama Temple subway meeting point around noon. Great Wall camping in style 🙂

Level 2:捕获 easy – medium

We rate this trip level 2 as it’s a fairly easy trail and we don’t need to carry any camping gear. Only at the start of the hike we have a good uphill part. The rest of the trail is just slightly going up and down. The second day is an easy downhill hike.  It’s a perfect trip for families with kids and people with an average physical condition will enjoy the trip as well. It is a safe trail but a few parts where we have to scramble over a broken section of the wall  so its good to wear shoes with a good grip.

History of the General Xu Great Wall

General Xu Great Wall was also called “Yangbian” in Chinese, which meant “Example”. This section of the Wall was constructed by General Xu Da as a model to the other parts of the Wall, especially to the Juyong Pass.
