Gubeikou to Wild Jinshanling Great Wall Camping 2 Days
Embark on a fantastic 13km Great Wall hike from the picturesque Wild Gubeikou Great Wall to the Wild Jinshanling Great wall. We camp overnight right next to the Wild Jinshanling Great Wall. From our camping spot we can watch the sun set and rise over the Jinshanling Great wall, the Gubeikou Great Wall and see all the way to Simatai Great Wall. It’s a long hike but we don’t need to carry any camping gear so this camping trip is fit for everybody with a normal physical condition.
Day 1: Gubeikou to Wild Jinshanling Great Wall Hiking and Camping (12 km, 5 hours hiking)
From our meeting point (Lama Temple Subway exit B), we drive for about two hours to the border of Beijing and Hubei provence where where the Gubeikou Great Wall is located.
By lunchtime we reach our local friends that run a small homestay at the back of a valley surrounded by the Great Wall. With a view on the Crouching Tiger Great Wall we enjoy a truly delicious meal. From here our adventure starts.
It takes us only 15 minute hiking up the hill behind the farmhouse before we get our first glimpse of the Gubeikou Great Wall. A few more turns on a little dirt trail, and we are on top of the Great Wall. We hike from tower to tower and take breaks inside or on top of the watchtowers. The rooftop breaks a great chance to take some awesome pictures of this 1400 years old section of the Great Wall.
Three hours later we arrive at the first highlight of today’s trail, the Gubeikou General Tower. From this 2 story high tower you can see the entire “Gubeikou- Jinshanling-Simatai Great Wall ” . On a clear day we can even see the Fairy Tower, the highest tower of the Simatai Great Wall.
Here we side track a bit from the Wall to get around the restricted military section of the wild Gubeikou and Jinshanling Great Wall.
It’s a really beautiful trail that meanders through farm fields and over the hill ridges next to the Wild Jinshanling Great Wall. Just when you think “we are in the middle of nowhere’ a small farmhouse appears. The farmers have been living there for 3 generations and will prepare us an excellent dinner.
After dinner we pick up our backpacks with camping gear and hike up the hill for 20 minutes till we reach our camping spot. The view from this camping spot is just magic, having a view over the whole Gubeikou, Jinshanling and Simatai Great Wall. Time to pop a beer 😉
Day 2: Magic sunrise over Jinshanling and Gubeikou Great Wall
We get up early today to watch a fantastic sunrise over the Jinshanling and Gubeikou Great Wall. This is the moment to take the best picture of your China trip. If you pitched your tent in the right spot you can just watch the sunrise from the comfort of your tent.
We pack our tents and head down to the farmhouse for breakfast. A short hike out of the valley brings us back to the main road where our driver will be waiting for us. By lunch time we will be back at our meeting point in Beijing.
Level 3: Medium-strong
We rate this hike level 3 medium/strong because of the distance. There are no steep climbs and we don’t have to carry any camping gear so a medium rating would appropriate too. Anybody with a normal physical condition will enjoy this trip very much.
Gubeikou Great Wall is located in Miyun county, 140 kilometers away from downtown Beijing.
Gubeikou was first built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550-557). In the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644), General Xuda was ordered to rebuild it. To enhance its defensive capability, more stones were add. Unfortunately, not many can be found today. The best-preserved is called...

Meeting point maps
April was a month where we went to Gubeiko Great Wall quit a few times And every time it was completely different.
The second week of April is the week where everything is changing in the mountains around Beijing.
A few days later we were hiking on the same Gubeikou Great Wall…. This time the sun was shining and the hills were filled with white Apricot flowers.
Again a few days later the Apricot flowers where almost gone and and the strong wind give us rapid changes between sunshine and clouds during our hike from Gubeiko to Jinsanling.
Yesterday we went back again to Gubeiko Great wall and this time the sky was so clear we could see as far as the eye could reach. In this area of the Great wall that means that the landscape becomes so picturesque that it feels like you’re walking in a movie scene.
As you see this is times the same hike in the same month and yet every thing was so different each time we went there. Collors changed form yellow to white to green to blue…. a slow painter would have a hard time keeping track I guess 😉
in The April 11 I been guide three people hiking from Gubeikou to Jinshanling Great wall and camping next to the Jinshanling Great wall
usually we hiking the opposite driection start from jianshanling Great wall and nighe camping next to GubeikouGreat wall but this time the day before i check the weather , the wind level is 4-5, so in the morning we decided start hiking from Gubeikou Great wall and night camping next to Jinshanling Great wall, because the Jinshanling Great Wallit camp site is more sheltered
together is four of us ,me Heidi and two Dutch Nicky and her boy friend , one Norwegian Hans there are so nice people ,i like then a lot , after we set up tens We talked under the moon and the stars. Nicky will traveling a one year in Asia, and Hans is law professor teach at Peking University short-term
during the day there are some cloudy and wind ,
but we are lucky afternoon around 4 clock the sky became clear when we arrived camping site we have a good sunset and beautiful moon and the stars at night
I bought a new camera, hoping to take the stars pic , because I often take guests camping on the great Wall, often see a very beautiful starts , Unfortunately my little camera is not good enough, maybe good enough , i just should learn good from camera manual . the Stares pic is not beautiful like a reality ,
