ChinaHiking Founders’ Favorite Sunset Great Wall Camping (2 days)
The most beautiful curves of the Great Wall
A 10-km of the beaten path Great Wall camping trip where we pitch our tents on top of the Great Wall. You need a good physical condition and some balance for this trip as it is a 1,5-hour uphill hike. The camping spot is magical, having a view on the highest Great Wall in the north, miles and miles of Great Wall in the south and the Chen Castle General Tower in the east.
The secret Sunset Great Wall section is located about 15 km north from the famous Badaling Great Wall. It’s a 2-hour drive from our meeting point at Lama Temple till our lunch place, a local farmhouse with view on the Great Wall.
After a great lunch at the farmhouse courtyard we take a beautiful trail through the valley till we meet the Great Wall at its lowest point. Here we start hiking the famous steep staircases for a good hour, passing numerous guard towers on the way. The highest section of the Great Wall has been partly restored and is now in perfect condition for easy hiking.
We continue hiking a bit more and looking for a nice flat place on the Great Wall. We put down our backpacks and pitch our tents. While the guides collect fired wood and prepare dinner, you can go explore more of the Great Wall. You will find more watch towers and the famous 180 degrees Great Wall Turn, a perfect place for pictures.
The camping spot is very magical, having a view on the highest Great Wall in the north, miles and miles of Great Wall in the south and the Chen Castle General Tower in the east. A great place to enjoy a wood fire cooked dinner and watch the sunset with beer or a glass of wine. We fill the evening with sharing stories around the campfire and fall asleep by counting the stars.
Next morning, we wake up with a cup of coffee, watch the sun rise from behind the mountains. After a simple breakfast, we pack our tents hike a bit further on the wall and take a small trail through the forest down to stone valley where our driver will be waiting for us. By lunchtime we will be back in Beijing.
Level 3: Medium-strong
A good physical condition is required for hiking in these designed trails. Hikes marked as level 3 are usually long day hikes or day hikes that include a steep uphill hike and/or trails where some balance is needed. Usually kids from age of 10 are all right with these trips.
It is located in Huailai county, Hebei province, west part of Beijing. Due to its geographical uniqueness, the direction of its mountain ridge, the Great Wall formed a huge 180°of an “U” turn. Thus the local people call it...

Wild part of Badaling Great wall camping in June 19 2016
From Gerald Bagge
The myth has long been dispelled that you can see the Great Wall of China from the moon. You might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this amazing structure from the window seat of a plane criss-crossing China’s northern regions.
But why not go and experience it close up on one of Heidi and Fred’s Dandelion Hikes?
Experience the Great Silence of China: they will take you to parts of the Wall that no other tourists frequent. Capture images of the wall and the watchtowers as they snake away towards the horizon. With nobody else around except the other members of your group..
Experience the Great views of China: you can decide what’s better. The landscape with the wall integrated into the curves and contours of the hills and peaks. Or the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside from the very top of the wall itself. Regardless of whether the trees and bushes are brown, green or covered in blossom, the Wall contrasts brilliantly.
Experience the Great Food of China: Heidi and Fred will never set off on a hike without building up reseves of energy. Massive spreads are laid on at local, characterful eateries, with cheeful hosts. Heidi and Fred work their magic on the trail too. Watch them improvise a trail grill over the fire, and unpack a spread fit for a travelling emperor. If you’re lucky, they will even have found space for a bottle or two of Great Wall wine.!
Experience the Great Walks of China: Heidi and Fred are gentle humanists who love what they do and enjoy nature. Personally I cannot imagine better company. They have dedicated a considerable amount of time to locating and researching walkable itineraries that you will enjoy. And you’re enver going to feel that you are being processed – as Heidi and Fred want you to enjoy their walks in small groups. I have enjoyed ever single one of them – and hope to experience many more.!
