Great Wall Camping

Take your favorite bottle of liquor and together with some good friends go and enjoy one of the best traveling experiences of your life. Camping overnight at the Great Wall, you can look up at a sky full of glittering stars. This nighttime Great Wall makes one feel like being in a cradle, its ancient body kindly embracing us. This place has seen the blood and tears of war, and also a thousand years of solitude. Perhaps like us, you are nothing but an adventurous, youthful vigor. Perhaps like us, you love to gaze at the shooting stars and tell stories till sunrise. In the morning you wake to another beautiful clear day, footprints and the echoes of laughter are the only things left behind.

Jiankou Great Wall Camping 2 days

Hike 10-km on Jiankou wild Great Wall and pass numerous watchtowers overgrown by flowers and trees. We pitch our tents on the Great Wall or in a watchtower and gaze at the stars around the campfire. This Great Wall hike has total ascend of 600 meters. You’ll need a fair bit of energy to reach top but your efforts will be rewarded as this trail is a mecca for photographers.

Jiankou Great Wall Camping

After a 2-hour drive from the meeting point (Lama temple subway exit b), we arrive at a local farmhouse in the middle of a chestnut orchard.   We enjoy a royal organic meal and go for a short drive to the start point of our hike.  We put on our backpacks and head for the hills.

The start of the Jiankou Great Wall hike is imediatly  beautiful.  The Great Wall drops down into WangQuan valley and climbs back out almost vertical.

We will follow an up hill  trail for about 1 hour until we reach the Great Wall at the second beacon tower. During the first part of this hike, we climb about 500 meters. Once on top of the Great Wall, our uphill hiking is mostly done.

As the hike continues at the top of the Great Wall, we enjoy fantastic views of famous Great Wall sections known as “The Wall Bow”, “Arrow Nock” and the “Beijing Knot”. We pass 7 beacon towers on this section of the wall. The best-preserved ones are called the 5-eye watchtower and the Jade tower.

We pitch our tents in front of the 6th tower  and  cook dinner over a  wood fire.  At night, a small campfire will keep us warm while we watch the stars.

Next day we  pack our tents and leave this beautiful place without a trace. We hike down the mountain on an easy  trail for about 1 hour and go for a strong farmhouse breakfast. Our driver will drop us at Lama Temple meeting point by 12 o’clock.

Level 3:捕获1 medium-strong

These are hikes where you need a good physical condition. Hikes marked as level 3 are usually long day hikes or day hikes that include a steep uphill hike and/or trails where you need some balance. Usually kids from age of 10 are all right with these trips. All camping trips where you need to carry the camping gear are listed as medium strong. If you have a strong partner who can carry the camping gear for you then you can join, even if you only have an average physical condition.

History of the Jiankou Great Wall

Jiankou could be translated as “Arrow Nock” in English, because the shape of the mountain there looks like an arrow or letter W, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock.

Jiankou Great Wall is located at Xizhazi village in Huairou district, about 80 km from downtown Beijing. It connects to the Mutianyu Great Wall in the east (10 km away) and Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west.

It was first built in the Tang dynasty (618-907) and was restored largely in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Jiankou Great Wall was mainly built with...
