Great Wall Camping

Take your favorite bottle of liquor and together with some good friends go and enjoy one of the best traveling experiences of your life. Camping overnight at the Great Wall, you can look up at a sky full of glittering stars. This nighttime Great Wall makes one feel like being in a cradle, its ancient body kindly embracing us. This place has seen the blood and tears of war, and also a thousand years of solitude. Perhaps like us, you are nothing but an adventurous, youthful vigor. Perhaps like us, you love to gaze at the shooting stars and tell stories till sunrise. In the morning you wake to another beautiful clear day, footprints and the echoes of laughter are the only things left behind.

Jiankou -Restored Mutianyu Great Wall Camping 2 Days

The wild Jiankou Great Wall hike is perfect for the adventurers that love to go off the beaten path. You get to pitch your tent on the Great Wall or in a watchtower  and hike the crumbled and overgrown Ming Great Wall built on mountain ridges and cliffs. Combine this with the restored Mutianyu Great Wall and you have the best of both worlds.   Sliding down the Toboggan is an option for this trip. (Fee for the Tobogan is 100 cny for adults and 60 cny for kids)

Day 1: Jiankou Great Wall Hiking and Camping

From our meeting point (Lama temple subway station) we drive for about 2 hours till we reach our restaurant in the picturesque Dazhenyu village.  We enjoy a good farm house lunch in a yard surrounded by chestnuts trees and with a view on the Jiankou Great Wall.

After lunch we follow a trail up to the mountain for about 1 hour till we reach the Great Wall at a second beacon tower. During the first part of this hike, we ascend about 500 meters. Once we arrive on the Great Wall, most of the uphill part is done.

As the hike continues on top of the Great Wall, we enjoy fantastic views of famous Great Wall sections known as “The Wall Bow”, “Arrow Nock” and the “Beijing Knot”. We pass 7 beacon towers on this Jiankou Great Wall hike. The best-preserved ones are called the 5-eye watchtower and the Jade tower. We pitch our tents in front of the 6th tower  and  get ready for a buffet style home cooked dinner to served.  At night, a small campfire will keep us warm while we watch the stars.

Day 2 Mutianyu Great Wall Hike

We pack our tents and leave this beautiful place without a trace. We hike down the mountain on an easy trail for about 1 hour and go for a strong farmhouse breakfast.

The Mutianyu Great Wall ,built in the Tang dynasty (618-907), is our destination for today. The Mutianyu Great Wall was reinforced during the Ming dynasty and restored by Deng Xiao Ping in the 198o’s making it today’s best preserved section of the Beijing Great Wall

We hike  up an easy trail and climb on the wall at the 14th tower of the Mutianyu Great Wall. From this platform we have a fantastic view over the 26 Mutianyu Great Wall watchtowers and we can still see the Jiankou Great Wall sneaking over the mountains tops we hike yesterday.

We walk on top the nicely paved Great Wall passing through 8 watchtowers. From watchtower number 6, Zhengguan Terrace, we slide our way down the Great Wall on the Tobogan. and go for a late but good lunch. The celebration beers are on us 🙂 By 4 pm our driver will drop us of  at our Beijing meeting point.

Level 3:捕获1  Medium-strong

We rate this Great Wall trek level 3 because  the trail on the first day includes a good uphill hike and we carry our backpacks all the way up the the campsite. The trail on the second day is fairly easy. No strong climbs on this hike. People with normal physical condition will be able to enjoy this trip.

History of the Jiankou Great Wall and Mutianyu Great Wall

Jiankou could be translated as “Arrow Nock” in English, because the shape of the mountain there looks like an arrow or letter W, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock.

Jiankou Great Wall is located at Xizhazi village in Huairou district, about 80 km from downtown Beijing. It connects to the Mutianyu Great Wall in the east (10 km away) and Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west.

It was first built in the Tang dynasty (618-907) and was restored largely in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Jiankou Great Wall was mainly built with...
