Great Wall Camping

Take your favorite bottle of liquor and together with some good friends go and enjoy one of the best traveling experiences of your life. Camping overnight at the Great Wall, you can look up at a sky full of glittering stars. This nighttime Great Wall makes one feel like being in a cradle, its ancient body kindly embracing us. This place has seen the blood and tears of war, and also a thousand years of solitude. Perhaps like us, you are nothing but an adventurous, youthful vigor. Perhaps like us, you love to gaze at the shooting stars and tell stories till sunrise. In the morning you wake to another beautiful clear day, footprints and the echoes of laughter are the only things left behind.

Great Wall Camping Trip in Beijing

Fast facts :
Leave at Lama Temple subway station exit B at 9:30 am. Back in Beijing 1pm next day

We will carry up our own camping gear and camp in a watchtower or next to the Wall

Day 1: 3-4 hours / 8km hiking

Day 2: 2 hours / 6km hiking

Included: 2 meals: lunch at a local restaurant before we start the hike. Brunch on day 2 when we finish the hike.

Not included: dinner so bring your own dinner (bread rolls, sandwiches,…or whatever your tummy loves  during a magic sunset 🙂

From our Lama temple subway meeting point our private car will head North West for about 2 hours to the border of the Beijing and the Hebei province. We start with a good lunch at a local farmhouse located at the foot of the Great Wall.  After lunch we will distribute the backpacks with the camping gear and start our Great Wall adventure

A small forest trail leads us past an old beekeeper and into the forest. The trail becomes smaller and steeper as we hike up Bijia Mountain.  Step by step fantastic scenery unfolds and after about 2 hours hiking we reach the mountain ridge and the Great Wall that was build on top of it.  Here we relax and have some picture time.

From here we walk on top of the Great Wall till the campsite.  It’s a 1.5 hour hike with that includes some steep staircases.  Depending on the wind conditions we pitch our tents inside a watch tower or on a flat spot right next to the Great Wall covered by the wind.

While the guides gather wood to cook a delicious dinner you can make the final ascend to Beijing’s highest Great Wall to watch the sunset.  With its 360 degrees view over the mountains and miles and miles of Great Wall this Great Wall tower has arguably the most scenic view in Beijing. We end the evening stargazing and chatting around the campfire. You might want to bring your favorite drink for this part

Long valley Great Wall Camping Trip

Waking up early is a must on this Great Wall trip.  Here the sunrise is just fantastic.  With a cup of coffee in our hands we will watch the nature waking up.  If we are lucky we can see the Great Wall towering above the sea of clouds. We finish breakfast, pack our gear and start hiking again. We cross the mountain top and follow a gentle downhill hill ridge trail for about 2 hours till we reach an authentic mountain village completely build with Great Wall rocks and bricks. It’s a hidden cultural gem where just a handful of people still live in a traditional way.

History of the Beijing Highest Great Wall

There are many temples around the Wall, and the bells and drum-towers are mostly well-preserved and have become protected heritages in the local.
