East Huanghuacheng to Zhuangdaokou Great Wall Hike 1 Day
This is a relaxing 8-km hike on the wild Huanghuacheng and Zhuangdaokou Great Wall. Our trail starts and finishes at local orchard and ancient walled town of Snipe Valley.
It’s a great family trip on top of a Great Wall which is overgrown with plants and trees. As usual we start with a nice lunch at a local restaurant. This hike starts with a 30-minute walk through a beautiful chestnut orchard of Zhuangdaokou. A small trail curls up the hill towards a broken section of the Great Wall. It can be slippery sometimes so make you sure wear good hiking shoes.
Closer to the top of the hill, the Wall is much better preserved. Once we arrived on top of the wall, it is in its almost perfect state and the views are very beautiful. The hike to the highest point is about 1 hour. After a rest at the viewpoint we continue to a less preserved part of the Great Wall towards a lonely beacon tower. A nice downhill hike through the forest will bring us back to Zhuandaokou village where our driver will be waiting for us.
It is a 3-4 hour hiking trips with a few climbs and trails might be slippery at times. An average physical condition is required. Usually kids older than 7 are all right with these hikes.
Huanghuacheng Great Wall is located in Huairou district, about 70 kilometers from Beijing City. It is part of the inner Great Wall that connects the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall in the east, via Jiankou, and Juyong Pass in the west.
During the Yuan dynasty, the Huanghuacheng area was home to numerous small villages. They were scattered around the Benzhenguan pass, an important pass to Beijing. In the Ming dynasty, emperor Wanli...

Beijing Zhuangdaokou Great Wall hike
When we saw the zhuangdaokou great wall dropping down in a lake we know we reached our destination. It was already noon so had a simple lunch with some friendly locals. With a picture of Mao looking over our shoulders we ate the fresh vegetable, tofu and pancakes.
With a full stomac we started looking for an old cave used in the times of the Warring States and later rebuild as a bomb shelter in time of the war with Japan. With some small tourches and even smaller harts we walked trough the tunnels. Passing heavy door left and right we realized how scary if must have been during war times.
A bit confused we came out the other side and found our trail trough the orchards of Zhuangdaokou village. It didn’t take long before we reached the big steps of Zhuangdaokou great wall.(Snipes valley） We climbed for 2 hours strait up in hot and humid friday afternoon. The spirit of our Dutch guest was perfect and that made it all a lot easier. Although everybody was happy I guess when reached the highest point. We ate the rest of our fruit, drank the last of our water, took some memorable pictures and hiked downhill with nothing else than a cold beer in our mind.
back at the Zhuangdaokou village we didn’t have much time for more than one beer this time. The last bus was leaving soon and our taxi even had to overtake this bus and drop us at the next stop to make us catch it!
As usual all went smooth and eazy with a drop of luck. Thanks for the good day guys!
