Great Wall Hiking

In Beijing Municipality, the Great Wall expands over 630km. Except for about 50km of the Great Wall developed for tourism at scenic spots like Badaling and Simatai, the majority of the wall is still left untouched, making it extraordinarily well-preserved. ChinaHiking will guide you to those most remote and long deserted parts of the Wild Great wall.

West to East Huanghuacheng Great Wall Sunset Hike 1 Day

The Huanghuacheng Great Wall is almost 11 kilometers long and joins with Mutianyu Great Wall in the east, Juyongguan Great Wall and Badaling Great Wall in the west. The trail we hike is about 10 km long, and we will be hiking through the wild west part of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall and the restored east part of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall.

Huanghuacheng Great Wall Hike

After lunch at a local restaurant, we start the hike with a 30 minutes’ flat walk on a winding little dirt road through the chestnut orchards in the village till we reach the wild part of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall. In this valley, the Great Wall is crumbling down a bit more every year.

A 1 hour uphill hike on the Wall will bring us to a very well preserved and impressive section of the wild Huanghuacheng Great Wall. You can see the whole picture of the west and east of the Huanghuacheng Great wall and Huanghuacheng Lake as well.

We will hike about 2 hours on the wild west part of Huanghuacheng Great Wall, then we follow the Great Wall path down to the Huanghuacheng lake. After across to the other side, we will climb the West of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall.

The west part of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall itself is quite unique, because it doesn’t have any of the famous big stairs. Hiking up to the steeper parts of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall can be a bit tricky. The Great Wall is very well restored and the patch nicely paved, so you will not have too much trouble. We hike on top of the west Huanghuacheng Wall for about 1.5-hour before we get off the Wall and follow a little trail down to the valley where our driver will be waiting.

Level 3:捕获1 medium-strong

These are hikes where you need a good physical condition. Hikes marked as level 3 are usually long day hikes or day hikes that include a steep uphill hike and/or trails where you need some balance. Usually kids from age of 10 are all right with these trips.

History of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall

Huanghuacheng Great Wall was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Huairou District, 70 kilometers from the center of Beijing City. In ancient times, Huanghuacheng area is full of yellow wild flowers (‘Yellow flower’ is ‘huanghua’ in Chinese) during summer time. People named this village as Hunghuacheng, it is also why this part of the Great Wall called Huanghuacheng Great Wall. Unfortunately, there is no more yellow flowers when summer comes now.

In the Ming Dynasty, the Emperor ordered a general named Cai Kai to build the Great Wall here. But it took him many years to accomplish the construction, so the emperor became very angry. At the same time, some traitorous ministers scolded that Cai Kai had spent too much money in building it. As a result, Cai Kai was beheaded. Later, the emperor asked ministers to check the construction and they found that the Wall was strongly fortified. The emperor realized that he had treated Cai Kai unjustly. Then he ordered craftsman to carve “Jintang” two Chinese characters on the Great Wall.
