Great Wall Hiking

In Beijing Municipality, the Great Wall expands over 630km. Except for about 50km of the Great Wall developed for tourism at scenic spots like Badaling and Simatai, the majority of the wall is still left untouched, making it extraordinarily well-preserved. ChinaHiking will guide you to those most remote and long deserted parts of the Wild Great wall.

Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall Hike and toboggan

The Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall is a breathtaking 10-km hike that combines the wild and restored Great Wall. Jiankou Great Wall is known for it’s dramatic featers as it’s build on steep mountain ridges and cliffs. The Mutianyu is one of the best preserved Ming dynasty Great Wall sections in Beijing. Getting to see the wild and restored section of the Great Wal in 1 day makes this trip an all round favourite.  (Fee for the Tobogan is 100 cny for adults and 60 cny for kids)

From our meeting point at Lama Temple subway station (exit B), it takes us about 2 hours to reach the starting point of our Jiankou Mutianyu hike.

We start hiking trough the farm fields and follow a small forrest trail  that leads all the way  to the Great Wall . It is a 500-meter ascent that takes us about 1 hour. Our efforts are rewarded when we stand on top of the Zhengbeilou Watchtower (991m) where some of the most spectacular pictures have been taken.

We walk east on the Wall to the highest point of Jiankou (1029 meters), allowing you to see the entire Mutianyu Great Wall plus most part of Jiankou as well.

After a good hour hiking on top of the Jiankou Great Wall, a tree full of prayer flags announces the start of the Mutianyu Great Wall.

The Mutianyu Great Wall ,built in the Tang dynasty (618-907), reinforced during the Ming dynasty and restored by Deng Xiao Ping in the 198o’s making it today’s best preserved section of the Beijing Great Wall.

We walk on top the well preserved Jiankou Great Wall passing through 18 of its 24  watchtowers. From watchtower number 6, Zhengguan Terrace, we hike or slide our way down the Great Wall on the Tobogan. and go for a late but good lunch.  (Fee for the Tobogan is 100 cny for adults and 60 cny for kids)

History of the Jiankou Great Wall and Mutianyu Great Wall

Jiankou could be translated as “Arrow Nock” in English, because the shape of the mountain there looks like an arrow or letter W, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock.

Jiankou Great Wall is located at Xizhazi village in Huairou district, about 80 km from downtown Beijing. It connects to the Mutianyu Great Wall in the east (10 km away) and Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west.

It was first built in the Tang dynasty (618-907) and was restored largely in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Jiankou Great Wall was mainly built with...
