Great Wall Hiking

In Beijing Municipality, the Great Wall expands over 630km. Except for about 50km of the Great Wall developed for tourism at scenic spots like Badaling and Simatai, the majority of the wall is still left untouched, making it extraordinarily well-preserved. ChinaHiking will guide you to those most remote and long deserted parts of the Wild Great wall.

Wild Jinshanling to Restored Jinshanling Great Wall Sunset Hike 1 Day

JInshanling to Gubeikou Great wall hike, Jinshanling section

Jinshanling Great Wall Sunset Hike

From our meeting point (lama temple subway station exit B) our van will head North East for about 2 hours to the border of Beijing and Hebei province. We start our hike on the West side of the Jinshanling Great wall and hike trough fields and over the hill ridges with fantastic views on the Wild  Jinshanling Great Wall.

45 minutes into the hike we reach  an authentic farmhouse tucked away in a valley right next to Great Wall.  The farmhouse family has been living here for 3 generations and will prepare a great lunch for us.

After lunch we set of on a small trail that bring us to an excellent view point and 15 minutes later we are on top the Wild Jinshanling Great Wall. The 10-km long Jinshanling Great Wall shows some amazing defensive features like barrier walls, battlement walls, watchtowers, gun emplacements, shooting holes and horse blocking walls.

We hike down the crumbled section of the Wild Jinshanling for about 30 minutes till we reach the most famous and best preserved section, and partly restored section of the Great Wall. Here you can see how the Great Wall of China looked like during the Ming Dynasty.

We continue our hike all the way up to the General tower with its intoxicating views over all 67 watch towers of the Jinshanling Great Wall.  We take our time for some amazing pictures and continue our hike down on the Great Wall.

History of the Jinshanling Great Wall

It was said that 3,000 soldiers from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces built two watchtowers, under the command of famous Ming general Qi Jiguang. They named this part of the Wall after the Great Jinshan Island and Small Jinshan Island in their hometown to show their sentimental feelings.

The Great Wall at Jinshanling is about 155 kilometers away from downtown Beijing and stretches from Miyun county of Beijing to Luanping county of Hebei province. Jinshanling connects to the Great Wall at Simatai in the east and Great Wall at Gubeikou in the west.

The Jinshanling Great Wall was first constructed in Northern Qi dynasty (550-577), with the wall, fortresses and passes. When the Ming dynasty was established in 1368, the famous general, Xu Da supervised and directed the construction of the Great Wall between...
