Gubeikou Great Wall to Wild Jinshanling Great Wall Trekking (2 Days)
Embark on a fantastic 13km Great Wall hike from the picturesque Wild Gubeikou Great Wall to the Wild Jinshanling Great Wall. We stay overnight at a farmhouse with view on the Wild Jinshanling Great Wall. It is a 15-minute walk from the farmhouse with excellent view point where we can watch the sunset and sunrise over the Jinshanling Great Wall, the Gubeikou Great Wall and see all the way to Simatai Great Wall. It’s a long hike but there are no steep climbs so this trip fit for everybody with a normal physical condition.
Day 1: Gubeikou to Wild Jinshanling Great Wall Hiking and Camping (12 km, 5 hours hiking)
From our meeting point (Lama Temple Subway exit B), we drive for about two hours to the border of Beijing and Hubei provence where where the Gubeikou Great Wall is located.
By lunchtime we reach our local friends that run a small homestay at the back of a valley surrounded by the Great Wall. With a view on the Crouching Tiger Great Wall we enjoy a truly delicious meal. From here our adventure starts.
It takes us only 15 minute hiking up the hill behind the farmhouse before we get our first glimpse of the Gubeikou Great Wall. A few more turns on a little dirt trail and we are on top of the Great Wall. We hike from tower to tower and take breaks inside or on top of the watchtowers. The rooftop breaks a great chance to take some awesome pictures of this 1400 years old section of the Great Wall.
Three hours later we arrive at the first highlight of today’s trail, the Gubeikou General Tower. From this 2 story high tower you can see the entire “Gubeikou- Jinshanling-Simatai Great Wall ” . On a clear day we can even see the Fairy Tower, the highest tower of the Simatai Great Wall.
Here we side track a bit from the Wall to get around the restricted military section of the wild Gubeikou and Jinshanling Great Wall.
It’s a really beautiful trail that meanders through farm fields and over the hill ridges next to the Wild Jinshanling Great Wall. Just when you think “we are in the middle of nowhere’ a small farmhouse appears. The farmers have been living there for 3 generations and will prepare us an excellent dinner.
After dinner we can go for a 20 minute hike to the nearby magic viewpoint. From the top of the hill we have a view over the entire Gubeikou, Jinshanling and Simatai Great Wall.
Day 2: Magic Sunrise over Jinshanling and Gubeikou Great Wall
If you are an early bird you can get up early today to watch a fantastic sunrise over the Jinshanling and Gubeikou Great Wall. This is the moment to take the best picture of your China trip. After watching the sunrise, we go to the farmhouse for a good breakfast with tea and coffee.
A short hike out of the valley brings us back to the main road where our driver will be waiting for us. By lunch time we will be back at our meeting point in Beijing.
We rate this hike level 3 because. For the distance we could give a medium/strong rating but there are no steep climbs so a medium to medium strong rating is appropriate. Anybody with a normal physical condition will enjoy this trip very much.
Gubeikou Great Wall is located in Miyun county, 140 kilometers away from downtown Beijing.
Gubeikou was first built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550-557). In the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644), General Xuda was ordered to rebuild it. To enhance its defensive capability, more stones were add. Unfortunately, not many can be found today. The best-preserved is called...

In the midst of rainy, humid and cloudy beijing there appeared a beauuuutiful day. The sky was clear and together with some young american professionals we went hiking on the wall. Our favorite farmers even surprised us with a delicious meal. Plate after plate filled with pancakes fish, chicken, noodles, vegetables….arrived at our table.
A short hike trough the high corn brought us to wall. We hike for couple kilometers on the wall, took some welcoming shadow brakes in the watchtowers and admired the beautiful scenery.
As heidi and I stayed a bit in a watchtower our american friends gave it their best and hiked a couple more kms on the to get the best out of their day. An easy hike down trough fields and farm villages brought us back to main road where our driver showed up the second we arrived. yeah I love it when things go smooth. Thank you for this beautiful day guys. I really enjoyed today’s talks. Good luck with the rest of your trip.
