Great Wall Trek from the  Jiankou West Great Wall  to Echoing Lake (2 days)

A diverse 15 km  Great Wall trek on the partly restored middle Jiankou  and the overgrown but well preserved  Jiankou West Great Wall.  It’s a fantastic trek where we climb on and trough numerous watchtowers. The views from this rugged Great Wall are excellent and the photo opportunities endless.  This Great Wall trek ends with a visit to an old cliff side Buddhist temple.

West Jiankou to Echoing Lake Great Wall Trek

Day1 : Jiankou  Great Wall TrekAfter a 2 hour drive from the meeting point we arrive at local farmhouse  in the middle of a chestnut orchard  where we enjoy a royal organic meal. After lunch your adventure  begins. The start of this Jiankou Great Wall trek is immediately amazing. Only 100 meters from Echoing lake  , a beautiful  mountain spring,  the Great Wall drops down into WangQuan valley and climbs back out almost vertical. We will follow a  mountain trail next to this drop off   for about 1 hour until we reach the Great Wall at  the second beacon tower.

During the first part of this hike we will climb about 500 m  but once on  the Great Wall most of the uphill hiking is done.As the hike continues on top of the Great Wall you enjoy fantastic views of  famous Great Wall sections as  ” The Wall Bow “, “Arrow Nock” and the “Beijing Knot”  We pass 7 beacon towers on this section on the wall, the best preserved ones are called the 5 eye watchtower and the Jade tower. At a highest point of our Great Wall trek we reach an intersection and follow the Wall towards Middle Jiankou.

This part of the hike is all down hill till the end of the trek. You’ll need a little balance here  but it’s all safe.  At the wall’s lowest point we  follow a small trail that curls trough the forrest and ends up right at our guesthouse in Zhuanghu village.

The  guest house is a farm house run by  a friendly local couple. The Chinese country style rooms are simple and clean. The cheff will cook us an excellent organic dinner.

Day 2:  Middle Jiankou  Great Wall to Echoing Lake

After our morning coffee and a strong Chinese breakfast we get ready for today’s Great Wall trek. It’s a moderate 5 km hike that combines the wild Echoing Lake Great Wall.

West Jiankou to Echoing Lake Great Wall Trek

The hikes starts at a picturesque village where many young art students practice their painting skills. A small road past a chess nut orchard will lead us to the Great Wall.

At the base the Great Wall is steep and crumbled so we will hike alongside the Great Wall before we climb on it.  Soon you’ll hike the  overgrown Great Wall and with every step you set the view will become more stunning. The wall is crowned with a partly renovated tower build on top a cliff. On the side of the cliff there is on old Buddhist temple where monks still come to pray everyday. We take the stairs down the cliff, visit the temple and make our way to the valley again.  Our van will be ready to pick us up and bring us to a nice restaurant in the village.

After lunch we head back to Beijing. The drive is about 2 hours so we should be back at our Beijing meeting point by 4pm

Level 3:捕获1 Medium-strongWe rate  this Great Wall trek Level 3 because there is a decent 1 hour climb to start with. On this part of the hike there is no shade so definitely bring a hat in the summer. The hike on the second day is quit easy. You’ll need a bit of balance for the hike down as the way down can be slippery so hiking boots are excellent for this trail. As usual we take a relax pace so everybody with an average to good physical condition can join this Great Wall trek.

History of the Jiankou Great Wall

Jiankou could be translated as “Arrow Nock” in English, because the shape of the mountain there looks like an arrow or letter W, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock.

Jiankou Great Wall is located at Xizhazi village in Huairou district, about 80 km from downtown Beijing. It connects to the Mutianyu Great Wall in the east (10 km away) and Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west.

It was first built in the Tang dynasty (618-907) and was restored largely in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Jiankou Great Wall was mainly built with...
