Great Wall Trek on  Zhuangdaokou, Hunaghuacheng ,Jiankou,Great Wall (2 days)

An epic Great Wall trek that covers 3 fantastic sections of the  Beijing Great Wall.  We hike  the amazing Wild Jiankou Great wall and stay overnight in a local farmhouse with view on the Great Wall .  The second day we hike the restored part of  Huanghuacheng Great Wall and  the Wild Zhuangdaokou  Great Wall.

Day 1: Zhuangdaokou & Huanghuacheng Great Wall Hike

The Huanghuacheng great wall  is almost 11 kilometers long and joins with Mutianyu Great Wall in the east, and Juyongguan Great wall Pass and Badaling Great wall in the west. The trail we hike is about 10 km long.  we will hiking through the wild west part of  Huanghuacheng Great Wall and the restored east part of  Huanghuacheng Great Wall.

Huanghuacheng Great Wall Hike

After breakfast After breakfast, drive 40 minutes to village next to Huanghuacheng & Zhuangdaokou Great Wall. We start the hike  with  a 30 minute flat walk on a winding little dirt road trough the chestnut orchards of the village until we reach the wild part of  Huanghuacheng Great Wall.  At this valley the Great Wall is crumbling down a bit more every year.

A 1 hour uphill hike on the wall will bring us to a very well preserved and impressive section of the wild Huang cheng Great Wall. From here you can see the whole picture of the west and east  Huanghuacheng Great wall , and Huanghuacheng Lake ,

we will hike about 2 hour on the wild west part of Huanghuacheng Great wall Then we follow the Great Wall down to Huanghuacheng lake, across the road began to climb the West Huanghuacheng Great wall

The west part of  Huanghuacheng Great Wall itself is quit unique as it doesn’t have any of the famous big stairs so hiking up the steeper parts of  Huanghuacheng Great Wall can be a bit tricky. The Great Wall is very well restored and the patch nicely paved so you will not have to much trouble. .We hike on top of the west Huanghuacheng wall for about 1.5-hours before off the wall and follow a little trails down to valley where our driver will be waiting and 30minutes drive to.guesthouse in Zhuanghu village.

The  guesthouse is a farmhouse run by  a friendly local couple. The Chinese country style rooms are clean and the chef will kook us an excellent organic dinner.

Day 2:  Jiankou Great Wall Trek

From our meeting point (Lama temple subway station) we drive for about 2 hours till we reach picturesque Dazhenyu village.  Before we start this Great Wall trek we enjoy a good farm house lunch in yard surrounded by chestnuts and with a view on the Jiankou Great Wall. Today it’s an 8 km hike with a total ascend of 600 meter so you ll need a fair bit of energy to make it to the top.

Jiankou Great Wall Trek

The start of this Jiankou Great Wall trek is immediately amazing.  The Great Wall drops down into WangQuan ( spring valley) valley and climbs back out almost vertical. We ascend about 500 meters following  a small trail up the mountain for about 1 hour until we reach the Great Wall at  the second beacon tower. From here it’s all about enjoying the scenery.

As our trek on the Great Wall continues  you can enjoy  fantastic views of the valleys and the middle Jiankou Great Wall.  We will walk trough and over 7 beacon towers , the best preserved ones are called the 5 eye watchtower and the Jade tower.

At the highest point of our hike we reach a Great Wall intersection and follow the wall towards middle Jiankou.  This part of the hike is all down hill till the end of the hike. You’ll need a little balance here once in while but it’s all safe.

Our driver will be waiting at place end of hike, after hike 2 hours drive we will back in Beijing again!

Level 3:捕获1 Medium-strong
These are hikes where you need a  good physical condition. Hikes marked as level 3 are usually long day hikes or day hikes that include a steep uphill hike and/or trails where you need some balance. Usually kids form the age of 10 are ok with these trips.

History of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall and Jiankou Great Wall

In ancient times, the hills in this area were filled with wild yellow flowers during the summer. The local people named their village Huanghuacheng which is Chinese for Yellow Flower Village, this section of the Great Wall was named after the village.

Huanghuacheng Great Wall is located in Huairou district, about 70 kilometers from Beijing City. It is part of the inner Great Wall that connects the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall in the east, via Jiankou, and Juyong Pass in the west.

During the Yuan dynasty, the Huanghuacheng area was home to numerous small villages. They were scattered around the Benzhenguan pass, an important pass to Beijing. In the Ming dynasty, emperor Wanli ordered a general called Cai Kai to build the Great Wall here because the Benzhenguan pass’ strategic importance was growing fast.

Its construction began in 1575, but it took many years to accomplish the construction. So the emperor became very angry while at the same time some traitorous ministers scolded that Cai Kai had spent too much money in building it. As a result, Cai Kai was beheaded. Later, the emperor asked ministers to check the construction. They found that the Wall was strongly fortified. The emperor realized that he had treated Cai Kai unjustly. Sorry for his...
