Many thanks to Fred and our guide Jane for an unforgettable experience!
The hike itself was mind-blowing; I'm an avid hiker in the mountains of the state of Washington, and as such I found the hike to be moderate. We quickly gained the ridge to the Wall itself and spent a few hours along the Wall, with plenty of time for photo and water breaks along the way. John did a great job making sure everyone got the breaks they needed, and also took some great photos of each of us descending the Ox Horn section (which was SO COOL to experience!!!). For the most part the portion of the wall we hiked is moderately sloped, with the Ox Horn providing a steep incline and descent over a fairly short distance. I'd suggest making sure your shoes/boots have good traction for the Ox Horn portion especially.
We only saw a few other people along the Wall during the day - it definitely made the experience that much more memorable to have things to ourselves for the most part.
Post-hike we made a quick pit-stop for snacks and headed back to Beijing. I would happily do another trip with China Hiking (and certainly hope I'll get the chance in the future).
- The whole tour was well organised and professional. There are no sidetracking or swindling of any kind to get you to purchase anything. It was just purely a hiking tour. (It's a rarity among tours in China) And the lunch was local AND delicious too!...

- Our guide, Terry, was friendly and relaxed. Taking care of everyone during the tour.
- Tour size was small! We had 8 people + Terry.
- At the start and end of the tour when we arrive back at the subway station. The owner himself came to greet us. Shows he really care and is deeply invested in making this a great experience for everyone. Plus their communications were super fast through email!
- The hike itself is AMAZING. I am glad I didn't just go to a restored area of the great wall. It really loses it's charm and historic value. Hiking through unrestored areas in Jiankou really makes you appreciate the insane effort that people of the 1600s (I think this section was built around the 1600s, I could be wrong :P) took to build these structure brick by brick. And boy was it magnificent!
- The price is excellent for solo tourist as you get paired up in a small group instead of having to find groups or pay a premium for just a guide yourself.
Some tips though!
- Jiankou section can get a bit rough. There are sections that require a certain level of fitness in order to scale and some sections are walking on the sheer edge of the wall.
- Wear comfortable clothing and backpack, you will be using your hand to climb some areas
- Skim through the first paragraph of great wall on wiki beforehand, it'll enrich your experience so much more!

My wife and I went with John Isaiah as a guide. He was friendly and great. He met us at the subway stop, we drove to a farmhouse for lunch, hiked an hour to the wall, along the wall three hours, and another hour down.
Even on a cloudy day, the scenery was gorgeous. Walking along a giant wall that has been existed for over a thousand years is quite amazing.
We aren't hikers but we survived the hike. John took an easy pace with many breaks. He also took a lot of amazing photos of us, for which we are grateful.
Definitely visit the wall. And if you don't like crowds, do it this way. And having a guide to transport you there and lead the way is invaluable.

Pros:
Not too early a start (9:30am at lama temple subway) and not too late back to BJ, with plenty of time at the wall (about 5 hours)
Fair price (600rmb)
Knowledgeable and friendly guides (Manuel and J.I. were both fab)
Interesting information about the history of the wall
Moderately difficult hike. (Totally fine for moderately fit people who are up for it, probably very easy for experienced hikers)
Good food (We had lunch before setting out in a village near the wall. Solid local food, and plenty to go around)
No jade/silk/pearl factory visits!! Cannot emphasise enough how glad I was to find a tour without that rubbish.
Cons:
.... none? :P Will be recommending this tour group to any friends travelling up to Beijing!

We would absolutely re-book with this company- it is wonderful!
Un particolare ringraziamento alla simpatia e cordialità di Fred & Chloe!
Once again, thanks for organizing such a fun and informative trekking session. I'd love to join one of the overnight camping sessions in the future.

From beginning to end it was really perfect: easy booking, fast answers, good organisation, nice guys, ride on the best section of the wall ... and even cool people in the group and beautiful weather !!!
It s not so often to have such level of service with a cheap rate.
Congratulations !

Walking along the Wall was a blast. The hike was just challenging enough to be really enjoyable. We spend lots of time hiking in the Canadian Rockies, so we didn't have much of a problem from a physical standpoint. We spent lots of time on the wall, got some great pictures, and were able to do the hike at our own pace.
We looked for similar tours while we traveled throughout the rest of China (for example to the Longshi rice terrances, or through the Karst formations down the Yi River) but were not able to find anything similar, to our disappointment. As such, I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone.

Our guide Heidi, a cheerful and kind girl, was very punctual. We met her and the rest of the group (two more people) at the accorded place, where we started the tour. After traveling during 2 hours in a van we reached a small town close to the Great Wall where we had lunch in the patio of a house. A local woman prepared us a lot of varied and delicious dishes.
After that, we hiked during about 1:30 hs to the Great Wall. It was a peaceful track with trees and the sound of nature. I think it was the best way to reach the wall. The path finished in a tower with a great panoramic view! From there, we walked along Jiankou (wild), toward Mutianyu (restored) section of the Great Wall. It was amazing! The scenery was beautiful with the special autumn colors. And the best of all was that there were with very few people, something uncommon in China!
It was an incredible experience, and we are very satisfied with chinahiking services!

Detailed Itinerary
From our meeting point at Lama Temple subway station (exit B), it takes us about 2 hours to reach the village where we have lunch. After lunch, we start hiking a steep dirt trail that leads to the Great Wall. It is a 500-meter ascent that takes us about 1 hour. Our efforts are rewarded when we stand on top of the Zhengbeilou Watchtower (991m) where some of the most spectacular pictures have been taken.
Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall hike
We walk east on the Wall to the highest point of Jiankou (1029 meters), allowing you to see the entire Mutianyu Great Wall plus most part of Jiankou as well. It’s a very enjoyable walk on top of the well preserved Great Wall where we pass the famous “Ox Horn section”.
Jiankou – Mutianyu Great Wall hike. The famous Ox Horn
After a good hour hiking on top of the Jiankou Great Wall, a tree full of prayer flags announces the start of the Mutianyu Great Wall. Here the Great Wall is restored. A short hike on the Mutianyu Great Wall leads us past 4 guard towers before we take start our 1 hour downhill hike through the valley. The trail ends at a picturesque village where our driver will be waiting for us. By 7 pm we should be back at our meeting point in Beijing.
Level 2: Medium-Strong
We give this hike a level 2 medium rating, as the trail is not too long but still most of the hike is uphill. If you have a normal physical condition you will enjoy this trip for sure.
