Detailed Itinerary

The secret Sunset Great Wall section is located about 15 km north from the famous Badaling Great Wall. It’s a 2-hour drive from our meeting point at Lama Temple till our lunch place, a local farmhouse with view on the Great Wall.

After a great lunch at the farmhouse courtyard, we distribute the backpacks with camping gear and take a beautiful trail through the valley till we meet the Great Wall at its lowest point.

The highest section of the Great Wall has been restored in a very nice way and is now in perfect condition for easy hiking. Over the last 3 years the old bricks have been collected and used to restore one of the most beautiful sections of the Great Wall. It’s a perfect time to take pictures while we hike up and down the renovated staircases towards our camping spot.

We put down our backpacks and pitch our tents on top of the Great Wall or at one of the watchtowers. While the guides collect firewood and prepare your home cooked buffet dinner, you can go explore more of the Great Wall. You will find more watchtowers and the famous 180 degrees Great Wall turn, a perfect place for pictures!

Next morning, we wake up with a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise from behind the mountains. We pack our tents and continue our hike on the restored Great Wall section. At its lowerst point we climb down the Great Wall and follow small trail through the forest all the way into the valley where a good farmhouse brunch will be waiting for us. By noon, we will be back in Beijing.

Level 2: Medium-Strong

A good physical condition is required for this hike as we start the trip with a strong up hill hike up over crumbled staircases for about 2 hours with our backpacks. As usual we don’t rush and take a good number of breaks so most people with a normal physical condition have no problem with the hike.  Make sure you bring good hiking shoes as we do encounter a few sections with loose bricks.
